15 Dead Man’s Party

After the presentation in the Wunderkammer, the doorbell started ringing nonstop, so Ramhart promptly steered me into the room we used for our Supernaturalist meetings and told me to stay put.

“Surprise!” Jools said, leaping from her seat and waving her hands in the air as Bex and Krish looked on and laughed.

“What’s going on?” I glanced between them, wondering if maybe Ramhart had mistakenly thought it was my birthday.

“Today’s the Annual Summit of Interdimensional Leaders,” Krish said. “It’s kind of like a UN for the multiverse.”

I must’ve looked confused, because Jools was quick to explain, “Once a year, the leaders of the favored dimensions meet. Only this year, since the meeting falls on the night of the Black Moon, Ramhart’s also throwing a party.”

“Okay…,” I said, still not getting why everyone was in on the surprise except me.

“Also, Ramhart agreed to let us stay over,” Bex told me.

“Which means it’s pretty much destined to be the coolest slumber party ever.” Jools laughed.

“But staring is strictly forbidden,” Krish said. “As Ramhart says, ‘They may look strange to us, but we look just as strange to them.’ ”

“Just try to keep chill.” Bex looked me over like she doubted I could. “You’re going to see some really weird stuff.”

I was about to tell her I couldn’t possibly see anything weirder than what I already had, when she led us out the door, down the hall, and into a scene so strange it seemed straight out of a movie.

Ghostly waiters dressed in tailcoats and bow ties floated around with flutes of champagne for the living and bottles of bubbles for the deceased. (You seriously haven’t lived until you’ve heard a ghost fart after consuming too many bubbles too quickly.)

There were long tables lined with towering cakes at least forty tiers high, and a giant ice sculpture carved into a three-headed fire-breathing dragon with flames shooting out of each mouth (I still don’t know how they managed to keep the ice from melting).

I passed a row of air misters bearing labels like CHEESEBURGER, PEPPERONI PIZZA, TRUFFLE FRIES, TACOS, and FRESHLY BAKED BROWNIES (Rosie Grace later explained that they allow ghosts to reexperience some of their favorite flavors from when they were living), before wandering into a room where a band of skeletons wearing sugar skull masks played before a crowd of spirits waving glow sticks around and slam dancing in a way that sent sparks zinging into the air every time their energies merged.

A clique of witches with yellow eyes and hairless winged cats perched on their shoulders cackled and squealed and tried to pluck a hair from my head when I passed.

I saw a man with a mask for a face.

A creature with a woman’s head and a leopard’s body.

When a wolf with glowing eyes trotted by with a pixie clinging to its back, I’d nearly convinced myself I was dreaming until a hand clamped onto my shoulder and spun me around.

“So, tell me.” Crowther’s eyes glinted. “What do you make
